Planetary Healing Artists’ tomorrow at Esplanade Market!

Come see Planetary Healing Artists’ tomorrow - Sunday 18 May, at stall 117, Esplanade Market, St Kilda! We will have First Nations artwork for sale and are pleased to announce that we will have two key artists participating in artist demonstrations: Thelma Beeton and Weijin (Edwin) Zhang.

About Thelma Beeton’s artist demonstration: Raised in Swan Hill on the Murray River, Thelma Beeton is a Palawa woman who draws creative strength from her totem—the extinct Tasmanian emu. A former graffiti artist, she joined The Torch program in 2016 and soon forged a signature look: bold, primary‑coloured grounds supporting flattened emu forms. Through colour, line and lively form, Thelma celebrates the meeting of many nationalities with First Nations clans—an artistic dialogue that is both personal and profoundly communal.

About Weijin Zhang’s artist demonstration: Rooted in calligraphy, the traditional art of Chinese Ink Painting (水墨画 shuǐmòhuà ) uses brush, ink and water on Xuan paper to capture spirit rather than exact likeness. Weijin’s demonstration will showcase proper methods of grinding ink on an inkstone, vary ink tones, and render motifs like bamboo and orchids with expressive brushstrokes and negative space. Visitors can try a few strokes themselves and learn how spontaneity and control coexist in this 1,500‑year‑old art form.
